إرشادات المؤلف

We accept submissions in Arabic and English. Please create an account with the 'Register' link above, and follow the links on this page to submit your text to the online portal. Your submission should include a cover page, the text for publication, and the images, in separate documents.

To ensure an anonymous peer-review you will be asked to resubmit if your name or other compromising information is found in the uploaded files (except the cover page). Similarly, submissions without an adequately completed cover page will be asked to resubmit. Please find the Cover Page Template here.

If your submission is accepted for publication you will be expected to cooperate with copyediting and other changes to the text that may be suggested by the editors and peer-reviewers. This process will be faster if texts are submitted matching the style guide. You can find the Style Guide here.

All submissions should have at least one image. Reviews should have around three to seven images and articles should have around three to ten. If the submission is accepted for publication the author is responsible for acquiring permission to reproduce images from the copyright holder. Here you can find a Guide and Template for requesting permissions to reproduce images. Please compile the images into a Word document (.doc or .docx) with their figure captions and upload it to the submission system alongside the cover page and the text for publication. If your submission is accepted for publication you will be asked to upload publication-quality images as separate files.

Editorial Process

All submissions are first assessed by the editors. Submissions may be returned to authors at this stage for further work.

This journal uses a double-anonymous peer review model. This means that the identities of both the peer reviewers and the authors are kept hidden from one another during the peer-review process.

Articles

Articles should be original work that presents historically or theoretically informed arguments into artwork(s) or issues relevant to the artworld of Beirut, the Middle East or the diaspora. Articles should be between six to ten thousand (6-10,000) words, inclusive of footnotes.

Commentary & Critique

Submissions in this category are critical engagements with, or commentary on, contemporary events, exhibitions, artworks etc.  This may take the form of an exhibition or event review or a discussion of a particular theme that the author sees emerging in the work of various artists and exhibitions. Commentaries and Critiques should consider the claims or arguments made by the artworks/artist/curatorial decisions and offer a response.  While it is essential that the submission provide a critically engaged assessment and response, it should also remain collegial and constructive.

Submissions can be up to two thousand (2,000) words, inclusive of footnotes. Images are the subject of study here,  and we encourage authors to include three or more to support their work.

In Dialogue

These may be interviews, transcripts, translations, commentary and responses that reply or continue a dialogue with previously published work in the Beirut Art Review or elsewhere. We welcome submissions that do not fit with 'Articles' or 'Commentary & Critique' sections. These may be very short, less than two thousand words, or they may be substantial, however we are unlikely to be able to adequately edit anything over fifteen-thousand words. If your submission is unusual, please contact the editors.
